About

A forum for Scottish Baptist history since 1979.

The Scottish Baptist History Project was formed in 1979. According to Ian Balfour, one of the founding members, its first venture was initiating a survey of Scottish Baptist churches in the inter-war period (1918–1939).

However, it quickly broadened the scope of its interests, providing an opportunity for Scottish Baptists, and anyone else interested in the history of their churches and members, to meet to share papers, discuss their findings and prepare a small number of publications for sale, alongside promoting other Baptist historical books. In the 1980s, a major focus was on hearing and discussing draft chapters of a book that was published: David Bebbington (ed), Baptists in Scotland: A History (1988).

The SBHP normally holds two day conferences a year. On some occasions, it has joined a church to celebrate a special anniversary — for example, two hundred years of witness at Irvine Baptist Church in 2003 and Stirling Baptist Church in 2005; and the most memorable was at Wick Baptist Church in 2000, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the then oldest continuing Baptist Church at nearby Keiss. There are occasional papers read on other historical topics; the majority of these have concerned Baptists in other countries or mission work overseas, or quite recently when a session was focussed on a book written by a Scottish Baptist, Derek B. Murray, on the History of the Glasite Church in Scotland.

People

Two voices at the heart of the Project.

The SBHP is a member-led community, but a small number of historians give it shape from year to year. Two of them in particular have carried much of the recent scholarship and organisation.

Rev. Dr Brian Talbot

Secretary, SBHP

Brian Talbot is a Baptist minister and historian who has shaped much of the recent scholarship on Scottish Baptist life. He serves as secretary of the Scottish Baptist History Project and convenes its twice-yearly conferences.

His published work traces the formation and development of the Baptist Union of Scotland from the early nineteenth century to the present day.

Rev. Dr Neil Allison

President, SBHP

Neil Allison is a Baptist minister and published historian whose research explores Scottish Baptist engagement with the wider world — from sea chaplains serving aboard ship to humanitarian intervention in the Balkans Conflicts of 1991–1999.

Alongside his ministry and scholarship, he saw active duty as an Army chaplain in Sudan, the Balkans and Afghanistan, experiences that continue to inform his work on Baptists in conflict and crisis.

He is a regular speaker at SBHP day conferences, bringing fresh archival research to the Project's ongoing conversation.
